about

The vocal arrangement by Daniela of this traditional sequence to Oya was inspired by the drum rhythm which Daniela kept hearing in a melodic way in her head. Instead of the traditional Bata Accompaniment, we have the rhythm transposed into two opposing harmonies underneath the sequence. Then on top of that Liz Gre improvises in a unique whirlwind style. The whole sequence evokes the sense of Oya whose winds of change can bring about destruction, but there is always the calm before and after the storm. Oya is another Orisha associated with the dead. She accompanies their souls from his world to the next. She is also Shango's favourite wife and Queen of the market place - a strong force who fights alongside Shango in battle.
